Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote Read More On this page , the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived.
